Payment currencies and hiding items

tuningforkWe’ve recently made a couple of small improvements to the site that we’d like to share with you.

Firstly, we’ve always had very flexible options for setting up currencies on your registry — you can list items in up to three currencies, with automatic currency conversion, and you can set up online payments through PayPal in any of the currencies that PayPal supports.

Occasionally, it’s useful to use a different currency for payments to PayPal from the ones used for display on your list. For example, if you’re based in South Africa, you may want to display your list items in South African Rands. But PayPal doesn’t support that currency, so you’d likely need to accept payment in US dollars.

We’ve always supported this, but we’ve now adjusted the Gift Review screen so that it’s stated much more clearly:

“This transaction will be conducted in GBP. The total to pay is £29.48.”

Equally, Direct Debit payments are (for now) always conducted in pounds sterling, so where a list is shown in a different currency, we’ve made that clearer on the Gift Review screen in the same way.

The other adjustment is a little hidden feature we implemented in response to a customer request.

One of our couples got in touch to explain that they’d added a lot of individual items to their list, with the intention of only showing some as others got reserved — so instead of showing every item and greying-out the ones that had been reserved, they’d curate their list regularly to always show a selected handful of available items.

We’ve always prided ourselves on the flexibility of our service to let you tell the story you want to tell, but this wasn’t a way of running a list that we’d ever been asked about before.

So we wanted to help support this if we could — but we definitely didn’t want to overload the management area for list items with another switch only a small handful of couples would ever likely want to use.

Here’s the solution we came up with: if you create a category for your list called Hidden items, any gifts you put there won’t be shown to guests viewing your list. Then, if you want to make an item visible, simply edit it to move it to a different category and guests will be able to see it. Equally, moving items that have been reserved into the Hidden items category will remove them from view.

It’s a bit of an Easter Egg feature — but one which we hope might be really useful to some couples, whilst avoiding extra complexity for most.

We’re constantly making small adjustments and improvements to our service, to try to provide the best wedding list service we possibly can. If you have any suggestions for features you’d like to see, or changes you’d like us to make, please do contact us, or leave a comment on our Facebook page.
